Dan Rabinowitz and Jonathan Levy perform in "Mickey Mouse is Dead," one of the Hangar Theatre's many Wedge shows this summer.

The Wedge is the corner-turned-black box at the Hangar Theatre. Home to the Lab Company-- an intensive summer training program for up-and-coming actors, designers, playwrights, and directors -- the Wedge offers cutting edge productions in a highly unusual performance space.

The season is selected and directed by Drama League Directing Fellows, and offers a wide range of works including both new plays and classics. Admission is free to these one-act productions, which take place before and after mainstage productions. Call 273-8588, x600 to reserve your seat.

Here's the schedule for the 2005 season.

'The Hairy Ape'

Written by Eugene O'Neill

June 14 - 25

Eugene O'Neill leads us on a journey through the mind of a man caged by his work, and his inability to belong in an increasingly mechanized world. A provocative account of the human capital expended in the production of the modern world's amenities.

Directed by Pesha Rudnick

'Mickey Mouse Is Dead'

Written by Justin Sherin

June 14-25

Harris and Finch are nervous. Mr. Disney is about to purge the Communists from his studio. What does Walt know about them? Why is he locked in his office, playing with a train set? And why isn't Grace back from lunch? Part of the Lab Company New Play Festival.

Directed by Hilary Adams

'The Thicket of the Lame'

Written by Molly Rice

June 30- July 9

An underground B-movie of the future. In a world where plastic surgery is mandatory and cosmetic gene therapy is government-sponsored, scar tissue means revolution and becomes as rare as gold. Watch Penny Virus, Mavis Payne and the other dark stars of the Rocking Horse Roadhouse as they ply their black market trade in pain. Part of the Lab Company New Play Festival.

Directed by Andrew Volkoff

'Dreaming of Chekhov'

Written by Bixby Elliot

June 30- July 9

Elizabeth has reached the third act, where someone always dies or gets shot. When Anton Chekhov mysteriously arrives at her door, she must decide whether to join him for tea or script the final scene on her own... Part of the Lab Company New Play Festival.

Directed by Pesha Rudnick

'Blue Eyes, Black Hair'

Adapted from the novel by Marguerite Duras

July 14- 22

A young man isolates himself with a woman whose blue eyes and black hair remind him obsessively of a man he has glimpsed once and fallen desperately in love with. Alone together, they live out a perverse ritual of attraction and repulsion, of desire defeated and deferred.

Directed by Andrew Volkoff

'School For Devils' or '7 Flamelets'

Written by Mac Wellman

July 14-22

Upon the Roof of the White House; or: the PLEIADES, a lost and Wayward Greek Play

Directed by Sarah Rasmussen

'DNA'

Written by Christina Gorman

August 3-5

Eye color. Religion. Sexual orientation. What if you could select the traits of your unborn child? What if your answers were graded? What if you failed? A play exploring our blinding desire to procreate at any cost. Part of the Lab Company New Play Festival. Directed by Sarah Rasmussen

'Hamlet, First Person Singular'

From the original text by William Shakespeare; Adapted for the stage by Julian Rad

August 3-5

Shakespeare's most famous play of murder, political intrigue, familial dysfunction, sexual longing and bloody revenge is brought sharply into focus in this new adaptation by stripping the play to only what Hamlet sees.

Directed by Hilary Adams
