In celebration of the tenth Anniversary of the Eugene and Clare Thaw Collection of American Indian Art, Cooperstown's Fenimore Art Museum will host noted American Indian artists and scholars for a lecture series, "Creation and Scholarship in Native American Art: The Past in the Present," 1- 5 p.m. Saturday.
"The Eugene and Clare Thaw Collection of American Indian Art 10th Anniversary" exhibit showcases 50 new acquisitions in a thematic display. Among the featured works are: a beautifully patterned wearing blanket with silk ribbon appliqué made by the Osage in the late 19th century; a wooden feast bowl made by the Iroquois circa 1780 with two finely carved spirit effigies; and a very rare Nootka float basket from Vancouver Island, made around 1910. These objects along with many other new acquisitions have further enhanced the collection to present a more comprehensive view of the many different peoples of North America and the masterpieces they create.
