CORTLAND -- The Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, led by music director Daniel Hege, will celebrate the birth of American freedom with a special Independence Day concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 30 at Cortland High School. Admission is $15, with $5 of every ticket sold going to benefit the Cortland High School music program.

The SSO's program of patriotic favorites is sure to start the holiday weekend in festive style. The first part of the show includes Calvin Custer's "Americana: An Armed Forces Medley," which salutes various branches of the U.S. military, George Gershwin's popular favorite "An American in Paris" and "God Bless America," featuring a reading of Emma Lazarus' poem "The New Colossus," with its invitation "Give me your tired, your poor..."
The second half of the show includes Morton Gould's "American Salute," John Philip Sousa's "Hail to the Spirit of Liberty," John Williams's "Imperial March," from Star Wars and Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture." There will also be an opportunity to sing along with popular patriotic favorites.
