Cletus and the Burners

Going back to the early 1970s, the Ithaca area has been home to many bands who play old-time music. Many of those trailblazers are still around, and now a generation of younger musicians is following in their footsteps.

Among them are Cletus and the Burners, who came together a couple of years ago at Ithaca College. Comprising Michael Penque (guitar), Phil Weinrobe (bass), Nick Aives (banjo), Tom Eaton (mandolin) and Ben "Tubby" Smith (fiddle), the band has released two albums for I-Town Records and has played gigs all over the country. Tonight (Oct. 23), the band performs at the Chapter House.

Weinrobe will also be sitting in with Richie Stearns and Donna the Buffalo's Tara Nevins and Jim Miller as the opening band for the legendary Ralph Stanley Friday (Oct. 24) at the State Theatre.
