Kevin Kinsella is familiar as the frontman of John Brown's Body, Uniit Carruyo Kinsella sings with the Sim Redmond Band, and sisters Charisse and Yvette Lucente have long been part of local scene. Now they've joined forces in a new project, and they'll be showcasing some fine music at Juna's Cafe tonight.
Kinsella notes that Five2-Uniit and the Lucente Sisters-has been an ongoing entity. "I don't play with them all the time for two reasons," he says. "It's something powerful in and of itself to have three women singing harmony, and I'm on the road a lot with JBB. We actually started this project together, but when I went away on tour, they decided going to keep working and do some shows. It's fair for them-they don't have to stop what they're doing every time I go on the road."
Kinsella actually has been singing with the Lucente Sisters for years, dating back to his pre-JBB days and "I-Town Revival," his solo CD. "We sort of parted ways for awhile," he says. "But when I met Uniit, she told me how much she liked 'I-Town Revival' and the Lucente Sisters' voices and how she was looking to sing with women herself. So when we all reconnected, it was perfect. It strengthened what I do with the Lucentes and made it more balanced."
A demo CD showcases the band's tight harmonies on mostly original songs, plus a killer cover of Dolly Parton's "Memories." Kinsella notes, "We try to learn all sorts of songs: some of my songs, Uniit's songs, and covers of tunes they like." The band eventually will record a full CD, but there's no rush, he says.
